What challenges
do we face when promoting the right values in sport? Our Sports Advocacy Group meeting recently brought together legislator
s, governing bodies and profession al athletes to discuss the topic of values in sport. Stephanie Brantz interviewe d Test cricketer Nathan Hauritz about his own values on the field of play and we posed difficult questions about sporting values to the audience. The answers Nathan gave and the debate between the audience members highlighte
d some of the challenges associated with promoting the right sets of values in sport, but we're interested to hear what you think. Have your say here. - 2 Replies

Promoting the right values in Sport
Perhaps there are challenges
in promoting values in sport at an elite level but in grassroots like your local soccer team it cannot be that hard. The coach needs to encourage adhering to the rules, encourage team envolvemen t, fair play and encourage team members to support each other. By doing this the values are learnt and hopefully transferre d to other aspects of individual s lives. The homeless world cup is a great beacon that displays how values in sport can help people not only gain their own respect, but gain respect and interactio
n with others. Check out http://www .homelessw orldcup.or g/. -

Re: Promoting the right values in Sport
Couldn't agree more with your point about the Homeless World Cup Mel - it's a great event that really encourages positive values from participants and it also helps to change people's opinions about homeless people.
I guess one of the big challenges in encouraging the right sorts of values at the grassroots level is how you communicate those values to the army of volunteers and committed amateurs who make sure that grassroots sport actually takes place?
As sport gets squeezed out of the school curriculum more and more it's hard to ensure that young people actually get exposed to the positive character-building aspects of team sport and individual sporting pursuits.
What community groups do people know of out there that are doing a really good job at instilling positive values in their members?
