  • Crawford Report - why we need more women in leadership positions in Australian sport

The Crawford Report has just been released and there's a whole section devoted to discussing the need for Australian sport to be open to more Australians:

Women are the first of nine groups highlighted who need to be better included in Australia's sporting landscape, and one of the key points the report makes is about the lack of women in leadership roles in Australian sport:

"Women are under-represented in leadership roles, as coaches and administrators in sporting organisations. Of 50 national sporting organisations (NSOs) that consulted with or made submissions to the Panel, only 15 had a female chief executive officer or executive director. Of the 350 identified board positions in these organisations, only 25 per cent were held by women. In another survey of the top 40 sporting organisations in Australia, only 13 per cent of executive positions are filled by women. With roughly the same number of participants in sport, it would be a realistic goal to have closer to 50 per cent representation of women in these leadership roles."

Without women leaders in sport it seems improbable that women's sport will be as actively promoted as it needs to be.

As well as more women holding more of the top jobs in Australian sport, what else do you think needs to change before women's sport gains the profile it deserves in Australia?
